Workshop: Enigmatic Stories of A Controversial Rabbi
with Elizabeth Betzel, LUT and Rabbi Daniel Betzel
Sunday, May 5 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
Jesus was a skilled storyteller and perceptive rabbi (teacher) who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey His message and meaning to His followers. His parables were meant to provoke and challenge the listeners to look deep into their own lives and to provide guidance for developing higher levels of consciousness. However, we hear parables today like we hear the fairy tales – as lessons for children – and therefore miss the message and power of these enigmatic stories. In this workshop, we will discover how the original listeners, Jesus' followers, may have heard these stories.
We will explore some of the aspects and perspectives of life in the first-century Jewish community so we can hear these stories, some two thousand years later, as a challenge to look deep into our own lives.
